Waterfall Walk, Kosciuszko National Park

This past weekend (in November 2023) we undertook the Waterfall Walk in Kosciuszko National Park. This one had been on our list of walks for awhile so we finally had the opportunity to give it a go.

We set out on the walk with our 2 girls aged 15yrs and 10yrs and started the walk just after lunch so we packed some simple snacks for the kids, including some lollies for an extra energy hit plus we had our camelback’s for water.

Remember to apply sunscreen and take a hat. Be sure to check the weather report, it’s worth looking at both the Jindabyne weather report and the Perisher Valley weather report to see what’s in the area.

The National Parks website classifies the track as Grade 3 with a suggested time to complete of 1hr 30 mins – 2 hr 30 mins.

Getting Started

You have the option of beginning the Waterfall Walk from either Sawpit Creek or the Kosciuszko Education Centre however we chose to go from Sawpit Creek.

Remember that this start point is inside the National Park so you will need to purchase day pass to enter which is approx $17 per car outside of Winter Peak period and approx $29 per car within the winter season. Check the National Parks website for details.

The waterfall

We timed the walk well, as we’ve had some rain over the last few weeks, so we could hear the waterfall before we could see you. As the sound became obvious, we turned onto a straighter section of the track and you could then see the falls through the trees directly ahead. The kids both yelled that they could see it and got an extra spring in their step.

The falls themselves had LOTS of water flowing and are surrounded by an elevated walk way to allow you to cross over the river.

We opted to get a bit closer and had to carefully make our way over some fallen trees and along a rock ledge to reach the water.

FYI: The rocks are slippery! If you intend to get closer for a photo, I recommend you remove shoes & socks (I may or may not have ended up with a leg in the water and having to walk back with a very wet shoe & sock). It was far easier to get grip with bare feet than with hiking boots.

The walk out

As soon as you leave the waterfall you cross the bridge over the river and start up a slightly steepish incline with some sets of stairs.

Approx half way back to the car we saw some beautiful rock formations and our youngest decided that one looked like a loaf of bread, and one looked like an elephant.

We also saw an amazing tree that had grown up the side of a massive boulder and then grown around the side of it which gave it a bent look. Nature is amazing.

We hit just under 6km with a time of 2 hours 10 mins which included our stop at the waterfall for approx 15-20 mins. We also had several little stops along the way to allow the kids a break.
